Steel Head fishing improving in Troy

Spoke with one fisherman who limited out on hatchery steel head on the Grande Ronde River in Troy, Oregon, today. He reported that he caught 9 steel head and 2 chinook salmon, a great day on the river and the best report we've heard since season opened on September 1st.

With the rain and cooling trend over the last two days, catch reports for steel head fishing have improved from the 0 to 1 fish per day, to 0 to 4 fish on the average. The numbers and the "bite" should continue to improve if the rain reported to be on the way really does arrive tonight.

Wenaha Muzzle Loader 2011 Rendezvous, Troy, Oregon

This weekend, April 22-24, the Wenaha Muzzleloaders will be hosting their annual spring Rendezvous on 'Grizz Flat' in Troy, Oregon. Bring your black powder rifle, join in the festivities, or just come to watch. This annual event sometimes boasts over 100 shooters and is an awesome display of old time black powder shooting.

The elk gather each morning on hillside above Troy where the Wenaha Oregon Fish and Wildlife personnel feed them during the winter months. Look close at above photo and you can see them dotting the side of the canyon.

It is quite a sight to see 150-300 of these animals gathered in one herd. Best time to view is in mornings shortly before or after they are fed. They tend to disperse and retreat to the upper bench after breakfast and can easily be seen on canyon walls from the county road.

Come watch the Elk and then visit Troy Resort for your lunch!

1st General Elk season opens in Troy for 2010

Today marked the opening of Oregon's 1st General Bull season for 2010. Pictured here is "Elmer" the elk, who wintered several years under Mallory bridge and by ODFW Wenaha Game Mgt. head quarters downriver from Troy.

Sadly, Elmer succumbed this spring to natural causes but will live on in the hundreds of photos happy tourists and sight-seers took of him. If you have any great elk photos or stories to tell, please send them to us; we always like to hear of successful hunts or any encounter with our neighbor, Cervus canadensis (AKA Wapiti, or elk)!

Steel Head catch rates improving on Grande Ronde River - Troy, Oregon

Steel head catch rates seem to be improving for fisherman this week on the Grande Ronde river in Troy, Oregon. The Troy Resort's informal reports have been 0 to 8 fish per day this week, as opposed to the last couple of weeks where 0 to 3 fish per day were reported to us. In general, the fish being caught to date seem to be largely native fish with a select few hatchery (clipped adipose fin) fish being caught. With the colder nights and water, we're expecting numbers to continue to improve. This fisherman reeled in a beautiful native steel head today (left photo) and also caught a salmon (right photo); Thanks for sharing the great photos of your catch, Jesse!

The Fuel Station in Troy, Oregon, is Operational again!

Our fuel station in Troy, Oregon, is once again 100% operational!

The Oregon Dept. of Agriculture tested and certified our pump today and we are once again pumping regular fuel, 87 octane (product also contains 10% Ethanol). Is a huge relief to finally not have to send fisherman, hunters, and other motorists 50 plus miles to Asotin, Washington or Enterprise, Oregon to get a few gallons of gas. The Troy Resort also has a propane bottle filling station.

Gas is available during Troy Resort's restaurants hours of operation, Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 8 PM.

Steel Head fishing season off to great Start!

With the 2010 steel head fishing season already started September 1st and the usual fall run peaking in October, already seeing some beautiful fish, both native and hatchery, being caught in the Grande Ronde River in Troy.

This lucky guy caught this keeper under the green bridge at the confluence of the Grande Ronde and Wenaha rivers, less than 60 yards from the Resort. Nice fish, way to go!
